EFCC arrests, releases NPL’s Babalola

EFCC boss, Ibrahim Lamorde
The Acting Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Premier League Mr. Tunji Babalola, was on Monday arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for allegedly playing a role in a missing N15m belonging to the league body.

The PUNCH leant that Babalola was arrested at his office at the NPL secretariat but the EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, could not confirm or deny the arrest when our correspondent spoke with him on the telephone on Tuesday. But a senior football official in Abuja who is very familiar with the case told our correspondent that Babalola was released on Tuesday.
He said, “He was released but I am sure that he was arrested because of the office he occupies now. From all details, the crime was committed before he became the secretary. So I am sure the EFCC needed him to help clarify some issues on the matter. The said money is not part of the crisis holding down the league right now; it is an old case.”
Babalola is holding forth for the league until the interim body to run the league is constituted. The NPL board led by Victor Baribote was dissolved last week by the NPL Congress and ratified by the Nigeria Football Federation during their 2012 Annual general Meeting last Thursday in Port Harcourt.
