The Management of The Polytechnic,
Ibadan, has ordered the immediate closure of its
Eruwa Campus following a violent protest by
students over the death one of their colleagues.
The students went on the rampage, yesterday, and
destroyed the health centre of the institution,
claiming that the death of the student was caused by
negligence on the part of the medical personnel that
treated him. But, the Public Relations Officer of the
institution, Mr. Soladoye Adewole dismissed the
claims by the students.
He said: "One of our students died. He fell sick and
was taken to our health centre. He was okay and
even played football after his treatment. But, the
sickness relapsed. Instead of bringing him to the
health centre which opens every 24 hours, they took
him to a private hospital, Awojobi Clinic, where he
died."
He said it was surprising that students claimed he
was given injection, adding that no injection was
administered on him when he was in the institution's
health centre.
Adewole said the management had to close down
the institution to prevent further destruction of
property.
He explained that management saw itself as a
guardian to all the students and there was no way
the death of any of them would not be painful to
them.
Already, Vanguard gathered that the protesting
students had stormed the health center of the
institution and destroyed many facilities.
