Lambert Tyem, a crime reporter for an Abuja based
newspaper, Peoples Daily, has been detained by
the Special Task Force Unit of the Nigeria Police
over allegations that he was revealing too much
information regarding their investigation into the
alleged $3m bribery scandal involving House of
Representatives member, Farouk Lawan, and
Zenon Oil boss, Femi Otedola.
The journalist was invited to the Police
Headquarters to divulge his source of information
as regards the police investigation.
He was subsequently detained for six hours.
According to the Premium Times, Tyem was
accused of hacking into the police operational
system to obtain classified information regarding
the investigation.
He was said to have arrived the police
headquarters at 11.30am. and was only released
on bail at about 5.30pm. He was, however, asked
to return to the headquarters by 10am on Monday,
July 23.
Reports say, Tyem was threatened by the police to
be tried on charges of "criminal case of conspiracy
and divulging of official secret".
Frank Mba, the police spokesman, denied being
privy to the case but promised to revert back to the
press today.
