NLC wants Jonathan to fire CBN Governor Lamido Sanusi

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for the sack of the
Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mallam Sanusi Lamido
Sanusi, for asking that the Federal Government to reduce 50 per
cent of civil servants as part of efforts to revive the economy.

The call was contained in a statement issued by the NLC President
Abdulwahed Omar, in Abuja.

The CBN Governor had on Tuesday advocated a less expensive
system of government that would reduce overhead costs during the
Annual Capital Market Retreat in Warri, Delta State,

NLC described Sanusi’s statement as a contradiction of President
Goodluck Jonathan’s promise to create more jobs and reduce the
high rate of unemployment in the country.

Two killed, houses burnt in renewed Lagos clash

Less than 24 hours after some youths clashed in Ajah area of Lagos State, the violence resurfaced on Wednesday as two people were feared dead in the clash which lasted for three hours.

PUNCH Metro had reported on Wednesday that the clash was as a result of a long-standing feud between rival youth groups in Ilaje end of Lekki-Epe Expressway and Ajah.

The police authorities had held a meeting with the community leaders of Ajah and Ilaje on Tuesday night. But despite that, it was alleged that youths from Ajah stormed Ilaje and attacked their counterparts with guns, cutlasses and other dangerous weapons.

It was learnt that some vehicles and houses in Ilaje were set ablaze in the violence.

Unbelievable: 12-year-old girl accuses man, 85, of rape

The Ekiti State Police Command has arrested an 85-year-old man, Samuel Oladipupo, for allegedly raping a 12-year-old JSS 1 pupil.

Our correspondent gathered that the suspect had on Sunday called the victim (name withheld) and sent her on an errand but later accused the girl of stealing his phone.

In the process of searching for the phone, Oladipupo was said to have grabbed the girl in his sitting room and forcibly had sex with her.

The suspect, however, denied having sex with the girl insisting that the pupil seduced him. He said he attempted to have sex with the girl but controlled himself when he realised that the girl might have been sent to lure him into trouble.

Oladipupo, who is said to have two wives, told journalists at the Police headquarters that he sent the victim on an errand to buy him a recharge card.

He added that when the girl returned, she said she was hungry and he offered her food.

According to Oladipupo, while eating, she stripped herself naked, exposed her breasts and asked him to explain while her two breasts were not the same size.

“At his point, I became aroused and I made an attempt to have sex with her but as I was about to penetrate her, I realised that she might have been sent to put me in trouble. So, I jumped up and left her. I did not have sex with her,” the suspect said.

But the victim who denied that she seduced the old man said she had gone to mend her sandals when the suspect sent her to buy him a recharge card.

She said after buying the card and loaded it in the man’s phone, Oladipupo later accused her of stealing his phone.

She stated that the suspect accosted her and she followed him to his apartment. But on getting to his sitting room, the girl said the phone was found on the television and he apologised.

“As I was about to go out of the room, the man grabbed me and pushed me to the sofa in his room and forcibly had sex with me. I screamed and a woman who heard the noise came in and took me to my mother,” the girl said.

UEFA could scrap Europa League

A proposal to abolish the Europa League and double the size of the Champions League to 64 clubs is among a number of changes to European competitions being considered by UEFA.

The European governing body is pondering changes to both their club competitions and will make a decision in 2014.

Another proposal being looked at is to award Champions League qualification to the winners of the Europa League, and possibly even the runners-up too, in a bid to boost interest in the second-tier competition.

UEFA president Michel Platini confirmed the proposal for a 64-club Champions League is being looked at.

In an interview with French newspaper Ouest-France, he said, “There is an ongoing debate to determine what form the European competitions will take between 2015 and 2018. We talk, and we will make a decision in 2014. There is nothing decided yet.”

Veteran actor, Ogungbe, dies at 78

Veteran Yoruba actor, Akin Ogungbe, died on Wednesday after a brief illness in Ogun State.

He was aged 78.

His son, Segun, an actor, confirmed the incident to our correspondent over the telephone.

The younger Ogungbe said he was on a location when a text message from a family member informed him of his father’s death.

He said, ‘‘I think it is the usual thing with old age. He was not sick before he died this morning (Wednesday).’’

The older Ogungbe, fondly called Ireke Onibudo, following his role in the movie, also produced Lisabi Agbongbo Akala, a historical play about an Egba warrior.

An actor, Prince Jide Kosoko, said the nation’s movie industry had lost “a father, leader of leaders and notable professional.”

He added, ‘‘He led an exemplary life. A lot of people like the late Ishola Ogunshola aka Isho Pepper, Chief Jimoh Aliu, Charles Olumo a.k.a Agbako and the late Afolabi Afolayan popularly known as Jaguar trained under him.’

Also, Chief Jimoh Aliu, popularly called Aworo, described the late Ogungbe as a very good boss who taught him the rudiments of acting.

Police arrest suspected ‘bomber’ near Ekiti Govt House

Pandemonium broke out in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday when a young man, suspected to be a bomber, was arrested in front of the Ekiti State Government House.

Our correspondent gathered that the suspect was dropped in front of the Government House by a commercial motorcyclist.

The suspect was said to be making telephone calls, which sounded suspicious and attracted a civil servant identified as Johnson.

Johnson, who accosted the man, was said to have alerted security personnel in front of the Government House and the latter arrested the suspect.

Some persons, who claimed to have been present when the suspect was arrested, said no explosive device was found on him.

They, however, added that some charms and weapons, including knives were found on him.

‘How my daughter’s fiancé bathed her with acid’

The motive behind the acid bath of 22-year-old Chika Egbo by her estranged lover, David Sulaimon, remains elusive, but one thing is sure, the victim may not remain the same again.

Chika is a student of the Enugu State College of Education.

Last Tuesday, when our correspondent visited her at the Burns Unit of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Egbo has become a shadow of the beautiful girl she was.

The substance Sulaimon allegedly poured on her had destroyed every visible skin from her chest upwards.

She mumbled to her father, a Taraba State-based businessman, as she could neither see nor speak properly at the time.

When her father, Matthew Egbo, narrated the incident that led to Chika’s state, the story brought tears to his eyes as he lamented that his daughter would never be normal again.

UZO WAZOBIAFM INTRODUCES #UZOGOESTOSCHOOLPROJECT TO SUPPORT YOUNG PUPILS IN PRIMARY PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

Over the years, Nigeria’s educational system has experienced a steady decline in the quality of education being delivered to its student populace. The reason is not too hard to figure out. The educational sector is terribly underfunded. There have been cries and protests over the current state of affairs in our schools and I am sure that there will still be more. Education, no sorry, a SOUND education is very key to national development both now and in the distant future. It is very obvious that a drastic change needs to occur real fast if we hope to save the system from total collapse.

The “UZO GOES TO SCHOOL” project is an initiative of STRONG VOICE MEDIA headed by UZO of WazobiaFM. This project is targeted at helping to improve both the learning and working conditions of the pupils and teachers in government-owned schools. A lot of parents enroll their wards in private schools for reasons such as better infrastructure, good teachers, better learning environment and many other reasons. However, a whole lot more parents cannot afford the fees charged by the private schools. “UZO GOES TO SCHOOL” intends to:

Aluu4 movie in the making

There's an Aluu4 movie in the making and it's being produced by Simony Productions, the Idumota marketers that brought you Blackberry Babes.

I hear the movie will be titled Aluu4. I kinda have my reservations about this movie...mostly because it's being produced by Idumota Marketers who only care about making money and not necessarily as a tribute to the memory of the young men who lost their lives on October 5th. And I'm almost sure no one from the production team contacted the family members of the murdered boys, or even visited the Omoikiri community in Aluu where these killings occurred...and they probably didn't interview anyone directly involved in the case, including the police, to get an insight to what really happened that Friday morning.

Their movie will probably be based entirely on everything written online, because I think you need more than a month of research work before you start shooting a movie based on a major real life event like this. I stand to be corrected tho. Let's keep our fingers crossed and see how the movie turns out...

@SHEIFUNMI WANTS YOU TO BARE IT ALL AT HIV/AIDS AWARENESS PHOTO CAMPAIGN TAGGED “GET NAKED”.

Get Naked' is a campaign put together to raise awareness about the risks of the incurable HIV/AIDS disease among teenagers and young adults. This initiative is primarily a result of the social and psychological stigma associated to the HIV virus as well as the AIDS disease. As young Nigerian youths, we experience our peers who either live or know someone that lives with this disease undergo prejudice as well as stigmatization and as a result, disclosure is less and risks are high.

The aim of this campaign is evident in our tagline: Go "BOLD" and "BARE"….protect yourself!

This approach is a never before experienced one in Nigeria especially. Being a developing country, the GET NAKED campaign urges and seeks celebrity faces that the youth can IDENTIFY with, mentors and entertainment icons to get naked in a photo campaign to encourage safe sex, disclosure, and draw international attention to this disease through documentaries, TV shows and the print media- which will all be a follow up to the initiative.

The event will be taking place at Bheer Hugz Cafe, Ikeja Mall, Alausa. It starts at 12pm and it is an open entry free for all (we have vvip tags for the celeb and they are protected, there is safety)

BRT Accident confirmed to us before but it is apparently a false alarm.

We apologies for the misunderstanding.

BRT Bus Full of Passengers Falls off 3rd Mainland Bridge into Lagos Lagoon

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), has confirmed that a BRT bus, that was conveying passengers across the Third Mainland Bridge, has fallen off, into the Lagos Lagoon.

The FRSC took to their Twitter account to break the unfortunate news. The tweet read, "A fully loaded BRT bus fell off the 3rd mainland bridge into the Lagos lagoon, 26-11-12. Rescue work in progress. Motorists be cautious."

It will recalled that the bridge – which is the longest in West Africa – was re-opened on November 6, after it was partially closed down for repair works, that lasted over three months.

Fire guts rooms in UNILAG medical hostel

Fire gutted two rooms in a male hostel in the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Idi Araba, on Wednesday.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the fire started from room 648 and spread to room 647 on the third floor of Block 6 Alliakilu Hostel. The fire caused pandemonium in the hostel.

One of the occupants of room 648 told one of our correspondents that they were not able to salvage any of their property.

The student, who craved anonymity, said, “Around 10am, I was playing basketball when I saw students running all over the place. When I got to the hostel, I noticed that it was my room that was on fire.

“We tried to put out the fire but it was so intense that it soon spread to the next room. The fire was raging because we couldn’t get a fire extinguisher which was in the hostel manager’s room.

“Also, there’s no water on the third floor so students had to go downstairs to get water which we used in fighting the fire.”

The student added that some minutes later, they were able to get fire extinguishers and attempted to put out the fire.

It was learnt that a commercial motorcycle operator, who had come to assist in dousing the flames sustained eye injury and was immediately rushed to Lagos University Teaching Hospital within the premises.

How to give your parents money

Most established parents don’t think that their children should be supporting them in their old age. Others, however, think it is a child’s duty to support his or her parents when they are going old. For the parents who don’t want your money, there are several ways to quietly give them money through the backdoor. Giving money through the backdoor is giving a person the thing that the money will buy, as explained in the steps below:

Show up with provisions

Comfortable parents will hardly request for money from their children. But it is important to always show appreciation to your parents and knowing they will not accept money from you, you should use money and get them what they will accept. This is always an easy way to free up other money that they need. If you are buying the groceries, they can spend the grocery money on the bills. Be careful to just do it once and a while or they will catch on to what you are doing. Children should appreciate their parents for this is right.

Fire guts TheNews, PMNews office

The headquarters of a popular weekly magazine, TheNews, and an evening tabloid, PMNews was on Wednesday evening gutted by fire.

The fire, which started at 6.30pm, however, affected the last floor of the two-storey building on Acme Road, Lagos.

It was learnt that the inferno was caused by a power surge.

An employee of the Independent Communications Network Limited, the publishers of TheNews, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said nobody was injured in the incident.

He, however, said the fire destroyed every equipment and property in the affected floor.

He said, “The fire was very ferocious. I think the fire was caused by power surge. When the power supply was restored, the voltage was high and some employees did not switch off their systems.”

Why I can contest 2015 election – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan has told an Abuja Federal High Court that he is eligible to contest the presidential election in 2015, even if it would mean staying in office for a total of more than eight years from the date he was initially inaugurated as President on May 6, 2010, following the death of President Umaru Yar’Adua.

The President made the statement through his lawyer, Mr. Ade Okeaya-Inneh, SAN, in response to a suit in which a Port Harcourt-based lawyer, Mr. Henry Amadi, asked the court to declare that Jonathan no longer qualified to run for office in 2015.

Amadi had argued that in doing so, Jonathan would be spending more than the constitutionally stipulated maximum period of eight years in office.

Building collapses in Lagos killing two sisters

A building located in Low Cost Housing Estate, otherwise called Jakande estate, in Oke-Ake-Afa, Isolo area of Lagos, collapsed, yesterday, killing two graduate sisters.

The mother of the dead girls, identified as Mrs Coker, a widow, who was brought out of the debris alive was, however, in coma yesterday. Affected were flats 2, 4 and 6 of the six flat low-cost houses built over 30 years ago.

The building, Block M20, according to eye witnesses started showing cracks and sinking over a year ago. The tragic incident as gathered, occurred at about midnight causing a deafening sound.

Vanguard gathered that while occupants in flats 2 and 4 managed to escape, those in flat 6 – Mrs Coker and her two children: Toyin, a graduate of the University of Lagos and her younger sister, Bukola, did not.

It was learnt that occupants of the collapsed building apparently ignored the warning signs of imminent danger which was evident since the past year. Tenants in flats two and six reportedly moved out some months ago, only for owner of flat two to lease the flat out to new occupants.

After the incident, youths in the area reportedly began a rescue mission. The body of Mrs Coker in her unconscious state was said to be the first to be brought out from the debris at about 3am and was immediately rushed to the estate health centre. Bukola’s body, in her night gown was reportedly brought out at about 5am, while that of Toyin was brought out an hour later, stone dead. When Vanguard arrived the scene at about 8am, officials of NEMA and neighbourhood watch were sighted.

The charge was filed at the Lagos High Court today.

According to lawyers connected with the case, Dr. Babalakin was being accused of laundering the money for the former Governor of Delta State, James Ibori, now incarcerated in a UK jail for a similar offence. The money was purportedly meant to buy a Bombardier Challenger jet for Ibori.

The money was said to have been laundered through Mauritius.

As at the time of filing this report, the case file is yet to be assigned to a Judge.

Dr.Babalakin is the chairman of Bi-Courtney Highway Service, which had the concession to rebuild the Lagos-Ibadan expressway on behalf of the Federal Government. On Monday, the Federal Government cancelled the agreement, with Babalakin's company saying it is yet to be informed officially.
