Vodacom boosts ATM, PoS connectivity with new solutions

Vodacom Business Nigeria, a provider of total communication solutions, has unveiled its Machine-to-machine solutions targeted at the financial and the retail sectors in the country.

The Product Manager, Vodacom Business Nigeria, Mr. Abu Etu, said new Vodacom M2M solutions were dual-SIM enabled, and would provide reliable, secure and a cost-effective solutions for Automated Teller Machines, Point of Sales connectivity and back-up applications in the country.

The solution, which includes ATMLink, POSLink and 3G Back-Up, according to him, represents a milestone in scalable M2M technology in Nigeria.

The solutions, he said, would utilise the GSM data network to connect retailers’ PoS terminals to the central servers or to the Nigerian Interbank Settlement Systems and the ATMs to the bank’s central servers.

“It enables seamless network fail over to a secondary GSM network in the event of failure on the primary network and vice versa, in which case, the user is oblivious to the network changeover,” he said.

Etu explained that the key concern among financial institutions and other retailers was data security, adding that Vodacom had built in adequate security in its new M2M solutions.

He said, “Our solutions are built on a secure network and all transactions are encrypted over the Vodacom MPLS network. We have put in place IPSEC tunnelling, private APNs, SIM authentication and a host of security measures to provide much needed peace of mind.”

According to him, Vodacom’s M2M solutions are able to offer connectivity in commercial districts and remote locations across all 36 states of Nigeria.

“This is done by using our extensive countrywide network and leveraging the reach of the GSM data networks. At 99 per cent guaranteed availability, Vodacom’s M2M Solutions offer businesses the ability to improve service delivery and increase their competitive advantage,” Etu said

Speaking on the debut of the Vodacom M2M solutions in Nigeria, the company’s Managing Director, Mr. Guy Clarke, said, “The time for M2M technology is finally here. This technology provides huge opportunities for a fast-growing market like Nigeria, especially in the enterprise space.
