FRSC seeks okada ban on Anambra highways

Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safely Corps in Anambra State, Mr. Hyginus Omeje, has called for the ban of commercial motorcycle operators otherwise known as Okada from using the federal highways.
Omeje made the call during a lecture he delivered at a workshop for personnel of the state traffic agency in Awka on Tuesday.
The workshop, ‘Risk Management on our roads’ was organised by the state Ministry of Transport.
The FRSC commander said as the agency saddled with the protection of lives and property on the roads, it was alarmed at the high rate and cost of road accidents involving commercial motorcycists on federal roads.

He said, “Our mission is to regulate, enforce and coordinate all road traffic and safely management activities through sustained public enlightenment, effective patrol operations, prompt rescue services, improved motor vehicle administration, robust data management as well as promoting stakeholders co-operation.”
Omeje, who praised the ministry for organising the workshop, also called for collaborations between state government agencies and the FRSC to save the users from preventable deaths.
He added, “Ebonyi, Enugu, Delta and Imo states have all banned the operations of okada riders; I don’t know why we would not have that here. After all, the majority of the operators are not from Anambra State.”
