MASSIVE rice farming will commence next year under the Subsidy Reinvestment Programme through irrigation from Doma Dam in Nasarawa State. the Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, has disclosed.
The minister, who made this known when he led the delegation of the National Good Governance Tour of the dam, said because of its potential, the government was rehabilitating all the infrastructure and the irrigation pumps to start rice production on the bank.
The dam, which has the capacity for 37.5 million cubic meters, is capable of irrigating 2000 hectares of land.
Maku stated that "the infrastructure has been laid and read, so what the government has done in recent time under the SURE Programme is to devote some of the money that we are recovering from subsidy reduction on petroleum products consumption to agriculture and Doma Dam is one of the centres where we are using to promote rice production."
